The olm is a pale, blind cave salamander with a slender pinkish-white body, tiny limbs, and external gills that look like feathery tufts behind its head. It lives exclusively in the underground waters of caves in the Dinaric Alps of Europe.

What amazes adults is its extreme longevity and adaptations to total darkness. Olms can live over 100 years, survive decades without food by slowing their metabolism dramatically, and navigate using smell, hearing, and electro-sensitivity. Their skin absorbs oxygen directly from the water. Often called the “human fish” because of its pale color and gill “ears,” this eternal cave-dweller shows how life can thrive in places we once thought impossible.
