The hoatzin is a chunky, pheasant-sized bird with a spiky crest, bright blue face, and reddish-brown feathers. It lives in the swamps and riverine forests of the Amazon. Chicks have two claws on each wing that they lose as adults.

What shocks parents most is its “dinosaur chick” defense. When threatened, baby hoatzins drop into the water, swim using their wing claws like tiny Archaeopteryx, then climb back up the tree using those same claws. The adults smell like cow manure because of their leaf-only diet. Adults who thought birds had left their reptilian past behind are stunned by this living link to the age of dinosaurs.
