31. Philippine Tarsier (Carlito syrichta)
The Philippine tarsier is a tiny, big-eyed primate no bigger than a human fist, with enormous golden eyes that are each larger than its brain. Its fur is soft gray-brown, and its long, thin fingers end in suction-cup pads for gripping. It lives only in the rainforests of the Philippines.
What leaves grown-ups over 40 speechless is its head-spinning ability. The tarsier can rotate its head 180 degrees in either direction, just like an owl, while its enormous eyes stay fixed. It leaps up to 40 times its body length to snatch insects mid-air. Parents who thought monkeys were cute and predictable are shocked by this nocturnal “living teddy bear” that hunts like a tiny alien assassin.
